A Groundbreaking Shift in European Defense
In a landmark move, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and French President Emmanuel Macron have announced the first-ever nuclear weapons pact between their nations. This historic agreement will see the UK and France coordinating their nuclear arsenals to respond jointly to threats against European allies.
For decades, Europe has largely relied on the United States' nuclear umbrella for protection. However, with former President Donald Trump urging Europe to take greater responsibility for its own defense, this pact signals a significant shift toward independent European security.
“This agreement reinforces our commitment to collective defense and ensures a credible nuclear deterrent for Europe,” said Starmer.
Strengthening Support for Ukraine
This new defense relationship also comes at a critical juncture as the war in Ukraine continues. With U.S. support for Ukraine becoming increasingly uncertain, the UK and France are stepping up to reassure European allies and maintain pressure on Russian aggression.
Both leaders emphasized the importance of unity within the European Union, especially in providing continued military aid and diplomatic backing to Kyiv.
Agreement on Migration Control
Beyond military cooperation, the summit also produced a bilateral migration agreement aimed at reducing illegal crossings of the English Channel. The UK and France will collaborate to stem the flow of small boat crossings from northern France, enhancing border control and humanitarian support.
