A Remarkable Tale of Survival Amid Southern China's Torrential Floods
In a heart-stopping and ultimately heartwarming rescue, an 8-year-old girl in China's Guizhou province survived being swept into a sewer during heavy rainfall — and was found safe more than seven hours later.
A Lost Shoe and a Raging Drainage Current
The dramatic incident unfolded on Monday as the child was walking home from school. Attempting to retrieve a lost shoe, she was suddenly overtaken by rushing floodwaters and pulled into a drainage ditch, according to local firefighting authorities.
What could have been a tragic accident turned into a miracle of survival. The girl managed to cling to a horizontal metal bar about 32 feet (10 meters) into the sewage system, resisting strong currents and total darkness.
Seven Hours of Courage in the Shadows
Despite being soaked and trapped in a cold, pitch-black tunnel, the young survivor remained calm and resilient, said rescuers. After a painstaking search, emergency crews were finally able to locate and extract her from the sewer.
"This first-grade girl fought against the pitch-black darkness, coldness and constant fear with amazing calmness and perseverance,” the fire department reported. “We give a thumbs-up to this brave girl.”
No Serious Injuries
Amazingly, the child suffered no serious injuries and was later reunited with her family. The story has gone viral in China, with thousands online praising her bravery and spirit.
A Testament to Human Resilience
As southern China continues to battle deadly floods and extreme weather, this little girl’s survival reminds us all of the strength of the human spirit — even in its smallest heroes.
